Name: Gumu
- Name Meaning: Strong
Age: Adult / 6 Years
Gender: Male
Species: Panthera Leos (Lion)
Appearance: Gumu stands not far above five feet at the shoulder, but weighs close to 600 pounds. His build is sturdy and comparable to a Pridelander King, cloaked in thick muscle that ripples underneath his pale tawny pelt. The lion’s subpelt is almost white the beige is so light, though he often leaves that dusted with dirt as to blend with his surroundings better. Gumu’s mane is a thick golden color, with his tail tuft matching it. His eyes are a deep umber, rarely hardened with true anger. The royal male’s claws are usually sheathed, though being hit with his open paw alone could send someone reeling. A long scar traces down his back from a past battle, still a deep burning scarlet.
Personality: He is usually level headed, though he often refuses to turn down a challenge. Gumu used to seek approval from all of the pride members as a cub, but fortunately grew out of it. Now he does what he must to gain trust, and will not betray it once friendship is set out. The only time he truly gets violent is when those he cares about are under threat, his entire demeanor changing with that. While he is usually affectionate and caring, he will use every advantage he has to protect said lion or lioness. Even if it means death, for either him or his opponent. Unlike most male royalty, though, he is content with not being the top of the pride so long as he has his mate near him. Even as a father, though, he loves a good adventure.
History: Gumu wasn’t but a week old when another cub was joined into their pride, at estimate only a few days older than him and his sister. Despite not being related, they grew up together quite well. While all three of them had their sibling spats, they had more good times than bad as cubs. A certain misadventure will remain in his mind for the rest of his life, or so he thinks:
They say you can be bored to death, but who would think it’d be in near literal sense? As it turned out, Gumu and his female friends found out the hard way. After what they called an extremely dull, hot morning; he decided they’d remedy it by traveling up to the drying river almost a league away. They did get to splash around in the ‘deep’ section for a little while, but not without consequences. The noise ended up attracting unwanted visitors, whom they didn’t notice until last second. Gumu almost lost his leg to an opportunistic alligator, though the cubs were lucky that there were only two of them that had strayed so far downstream. They managed to escape unscathed aside from missing hair, but needless to say he learned his lesson about plunging ahead without looking first.
Neema was more miffed about the adventure than anything, but Kuukeni’s reaction did bring him solace. She wasn’t infuriated unlike her adopted sister, but simply said that everyone makes mistakes – Some just more grave than others. Their little trio was naturally banned from the river until the elder ones were certain that the alligators were gone, but that was to be expected.
Gumu’s later reaction to their being betrothed, though, came as a welcome surprise when he was a year old. He’d noticed in the passing time he’d begun to feel for her not as a sister, but something more. He just wasn’t sure what. The young lion was a little put off that Kuukeni began avoiding him and became extremely quiet, though. Becoming a little distant, but it wasn’t until he spoke to his mother that he realized the problem. Once told that she was more or less flustered about the arrangement, Gumu began to collect small gifts for her, such as one of the water lilies that she fancied or making a special kill for her – Giving them randomly, just as he thought about it rather than for a special occasion. His efforts began to pay off as their old friendship returned, even receiving returned acts.
Unfortunately for him and his father’s pride, though; things began to slope downwards with time. They were forced to move on from the place they called home, abandoning it. The pride traveled as rouges for some time, until the members either died or joined other prides. Soon it was just four of them left – He, Neema, Kuukeni, and Tii.
Utter peril struck him when it looked like Kuukeni was killed in a hunt. He himself saw it as it happened … The blood, and her unmoving form. Gumu sat by her for hours, until they finally made him press on at moonhigh. They said that there was no way she was still alive after being kicked so hard, as much as they wanted her to be. Her circle had not been full.
He was lost in a daze for many moons after that, losing weight and his muscularity. It took him some time to finally accept her death, it being almost a full year before he returned to how he was in physical form. The golden lion refused to take another mate, though – Feeling it would betray his memories of Kuukeni.
When he did encounter her, three years later, all he could do was stare. It was like from one of his dreams, with her walking out of the shadows. Returning to them, alive. She was older, more elegant, yes … But a miracle.
The entire group’s reunion was something that wouldn’t leave him, whether or not she remembered everything. Gumu made her a promise – That he would never leave her indefinitely again, and that he would help her finish regaining her memories. He held to his promise, too. It was one thing he would not let go.
Mere moonspans later, they finally conceded to join another’s pride. Amri met his approval, and vice versa. They could live with one another, even at different ranks despite both being of royal blood. After all … He had his daughter and mate, now.
Skills: Due to his sheer size, he cannot do much tree climbing, but he can use his muscles and claws to propel himself up rockface if he wants to. However, his size also helps when taking down larger prey if he feels he should assist the lionesses. On a different note, though, he is also skilled at cub-sitting, oddly enough.
