The expert Pokemon trainer sat in front of the mic, patting his faithful pikachu on his head. The DJ sat across from them, excitedly telling the public about a new, exciting announcement from their 'special guest'. The trainer smiled. He had always liked the trainer profile radio show...
He opened his mouth to speak when the announcer cued him and switched the microphone feedback. "This is Red, the Pokemon trainer from Pallet Town. I am sending out a special announcement to all trainers from all over the world--I am sending out a special challenge. I challenge you to come and battle me on May 23. I challenge you to show me how you've bonded with your Pokemon companions. I challenge you to defeat me. I will be waiting for you at the Battle Dome in Johto. Details are available upon request. I assure you that the prizes will be great. So all of you, everywhere--train your Pokemon, work hard with them and treat them with care, and come face me!"
The mic switched again, and Red sighed. He was now thirty years old, and he felt it. Pika was getting on in age, as well--he was the strongest pikachu for his age, at 20 years old. Red wasn't sure how long pikachu lived, but Pika seemed to be healthy and strong as ever, if a bit slower than he used to be...
Red nodded to the announcer and left the studio, feeling the tingle of excitement that he hadn't felt in years.

Jace ran around his yard in circles, a small stick in his hand. His face was flushed and sweaty with effort and exercise, but there was a jubilant smile on his face.
A small vulpix barked happily and chased after the boy, tongue hanging out of its mouth. Following it closely was a gastly, a happy and relaxed expression on its face.
Slow, slow! a voice echoed in Jace's head. The young man smirked and ran faster. "No way, Viola! Get your six-tailed butt in gear!" Jace shouted, laughing. "This is good training for you!"
The young vulpix, or Viola, as she was called, was telepathic--she could understand your thoughts and communicate as such. It was also helpful because it allowed Jace to know what his other Pokemon were thinking--although Rast, his gastly, didn't need that.
"Silly Jace!" Rast said, his ghostly voice raspy and ethereal sounding. Off to the side, Rowan, the spearow, watched with disdain. Rowan respected his trainer, but did not yet trust him. The bird Pokemon was fairly ornery and would take a while to get used to being trained under a human.
The raven-haired finally stopped, panting. His long-sleeve button-down shirt was unbuttoned to reveal a white undershirt, and the sleeves were rolled up to reveal tanned and hardened muscles. The carpenter's belt was still around his waist from earlier that day, when the 17-year-old worked as an assistant for his father.
"Whew! All right guys, time to rest and get some dinner," Jace said, smiling easily. Food? Viola inquired, tilting her head. Rowan perked up from beside them.
"Yep, come on in, guys. Gotta build up your strength for tomorrow," he said. Tomorrow was the day he started his adventure. Tomorrow, he began his training with his Pokemon to defeat Morty and then move on to gather more badges and more Pokemon.
Jace lived in Ecruteak City, where the legendary dogs stayed to watch over the Burned Tower. He promised himself someday that he would catch one of them, and so far, he felt drawn towards Raikou.
"Okay, time to come inside, guys," he said to his Pokemon. They trotted, floated, and flapped their way in, and Jace smiled to himself. He couldn't wait to defeat Red...someday.

Marcus Terka steepled his fingers together and leaned forward. The desk that he leaned upon was not his. This office didn't used to belong to him. This place did not belong to him. These thoughts irritated him.
"My dear," he crooned to the girl in front of him. She twitched in answer. Her shinx made a small noise beside her.
"Laila. You are going to work for me now? I believe that you wanted to stop the pollution going on and help to fund that? I may need you to fight the non-believers, those greedy beings who would stop us..."
"Yeah," Laila said quietly. Her deep blue eyes looked down at the carpet, and she tucked a strand of blonde hair out of her face. She believed in protecting Pokemon, no matter what...she glanced at Fiona, her shinx, and she thought about Star and Sasha, her ralts and combee.
"Will I be able to keep training and collecting Pokemon?" she asked suddenly, apprehensive.
Marcus smiled at her. "Miss Conway, I WANT you to do that. I'd like you to get good enough to defeat Red and get our name out there. Do you think you're strong enough to do that?" he asked.
Laila's lips pursed in thought. She seriously doubted herself, but if she tried, she'd at least get some Pokemon on the way...
"All right, I'll try for you," she said. Marcus Terka clapped his hands together in a businesslike way.
"Splendid! I'll supply you with whatever you need," he said. Laila turned and left without another word, Fiona following her.
"I'll need your talents to win the people over, after all," he muttered, his smile suddenly turning to leer as the girl left.
