Common? Check. Under-appreciated? Check. Sometimes filled with Crouching Epic? Check.
Rattata (Main Subject). Pidgey Spearow. Sentret. Hoothoot. Zigzagoon. Taillow. Poochyena.
Do you like them? Love them, or do you hate them with a passion? What strategies do you like to use? Any fond memories of certain pokemon? We'd love to hear about them.

I love Pidgey and its evolutions soooo much. I think there are plenty of people who like poochyena, though. Not really a fan of the others, though, even though I've gotten my butt kicked by Hyper Fang at times.
You know a great underappreciated Pokemon? Zubat. Supersonic has even the highest levelled Pokemon stumbling around and hitting itself for major damage. Epic win.

*Grins.* Pidgey, and especially rattata, are some of my favorites. I'm fixing to do a rattata-only run on FireRed, which will definitely be fun. (Yeah, I'll need some HM slaves, XD, but same thing.) I've noticed a lot of people think poochyena is just a crutch character, though I like to hold onto it. *Nods.* Zubat is another one of these. I should add it to the list.

I also think that Pikachu's gotten so worn-out in the anime that people don't play him anymore. It's a pretty good Pokemon--especially what with double-team and thunder wave.

*Nods.* Agreed. Sure, its overdone and worn out in the anime, but don't take it out on the game-base mouse. And when you pair it with a Light Ball, wow. You've just found yourself a Glass Cannon. It may not be able to take hits, but it can dish them out better than an evolved raichu.

Supersonic has even the highest levelled Pokemon stumbling around and hitting itself for major damage. Epic win. Confuse Ray is where it's at . I noticed you're missing starly and bidoof. I went with starly all the way to the Elite Four. It's a beast . Though I didn't use it , Patrat should be added as well. It's like ratatta, only it gets hypnosis and confuse ray in addition to the fang moves .

I always used to love Pidgey's evolutionary line...my team in Red/Blue/Yellow ALWAYS included a Pidgeot by the time I took on the Elite Four. Rattata I was less fond of...maybe next time I use one I'll give it an Everstone...I don't like Raticate so much.
I think Meowth/Persian may also make this list...I've never heard of many people using them, possibly because of the negative stigma the anime spins on them, but I have a Persian in my core team, and for a Speed-focused Pokemon, it still knows how to fight hard.
I'll agree to most of those Pokemon being underappreciated, and I also like Poochyena/Mightyena, even though I don't have much exprience with one in my team, thanks to missing the entire third generation.
As for 2gamers' comments on Gen IV & V's hidden gems...I'll agree with Starly any day. My Platinum file has a Staraptor that can give most Pokemon a good run for their money. Bidoof, on the other hand...ugh, I won't even mention it beyond that.
Gen V, on the other hand...I think I'll agree with Patrat/Watchog there. I never trained one, but I've faced them countless times, and they are a royal pain when they get lucky with a streak of Hypnosis attacks. I also think Purrloin/Liepard has some potential there as well. I though my Purrlion was absolutely useless when I was training it in White, not so much a Glass Cannon as a Glass Pea Shooter...weak and useless. Liepard, though, actually can pack a bit of a punch...raise them right, and you've got a wickedly fast Dark-type on your hands.
Basically, any under-appreciated Pokemon has some form of hidden epicness inside it, all it takes is the right training and moveset to really unleash it.

I haven't seen a ton of people use Mankey. I just remember that it kicked butt in the older versions of Pokemon, lol.

Speaking of rattata, I'm actually doing a rattata-only run in FireRed. Without evolving it. So far, Niggles (Yes, Niggles. ;D/ ) is at a 28, we have two badges, and we're going strong. We're about to head to the third gym, too. After I tackle S.S.Anne. I'll have to agree with both parts of the post, though, regarding persian and mightyena lines. Both are not only competent, but quite frankly scarily powerful with the right training. (Not EV/IV Training, either.) Starly line, too, but not bidoof. It seems relatively useless, and entirely so. I haven't gotten Gen V yet, so I couldn't testify to that, but I know all too well that liepard looks like it'll be just as good - if not better than - persian. I plan on having one in my team, definitely. *Grins.*
