Name: Darwing
Species: Cross-breed Dragon
Gender: Male
Age: Young Adult
Appearance: Darwing is naturally a quadrupedal dragon, and stands at 5'2" tall at the shoulders. From his nose to the tip of his tail, he measures around 19'8" in length, from nose to tail, and his wingspan, fully extended, is about 24'9". Said wings fold at multiple points to allow their span to fold comfortably at his sides when he is not in flight.
Darwing's entire body is covered with bright yellow, overlapping small scales, save for the wings where fire-resistant, moderately dark grey leathery skin is exposed, the back edges of his wings covered with similarly dark, fire-resistant feathers to assist him in flight, and his underbelly, where the scales are less prominent, and fade to a pale grey colour. Pale ivory horns sprout from his triangular head, above and behind his electric blue, cat-like eyes, and black, razor-sharp claws adorn his feet, 3 digits to his hind feet, and 4 to his fore feet, including one thumb-like claw on each fore foot, giving him the ability to grasp objects and wield them with surprising dexterity. His tail is unadorned, and simply tapers out to a soft point, no claw or feature of any kind adorning the tip.
But one of Darwing's most unique features is a strange, complex system of muscles, tendons and bone in his hip region, that allows him to, almost at will, reconfigure the layout of his hips, allowing him to stand in a full, bidepal form, freeing his forefeet to use as he pleases. In this form, he stands at 12'10" tall.
Darwing's rough upbringing has given him a slim, muscular physique, and his love of flying has graced him with particularly well-developed wing muscles. He is quick and agile both on the ground and in the air because of this, and far faster and nimbler than the rest of his clan.
Personality: Thanks in no small part to Darwing's tragic past, the young dragon has almost completely enclosed himself within a psychological shell. He rarely seeks out the contact of others, and will only do so if his lonliness makes him desperate.
Darwing's abusive childhood has left him with a rather pessimistic view of the world. He believes he was a mistake of the fates, a creature that was never supposed to have existed, and as such, fate is using his torment and abuse as a punishment for this. While he continues to hope that perhaps, someday, things will turn around and fate will smile upon him, he dismisses such a thing as near-impossible.
Socially, Darwing is shy, submissive, and generally tries to avoid conversing with any other dragon whenever possible...in fact, he tends to avoid company entirely, used to the lonliness and solitude, much preferring it to the insults and abuse he's used to getting. If one can make conversation with him, though, he can possess a certain level of intelligence, but often chooses his words with extreme care, fearful of insulting anyone, directly or indirectly.
While Darwing is no pacifist, understanding that violence is sometimes necessarry, he will never pick fights unless very sorely provoked, and generally will flee any conflict he gets himself into. If he can't flee, however, he will quickly give in the the opponent through his natural submissiveness. Unless he is given something to live and fight for, Darwing will continue to let more aggressive dragons trample all over him, both psychologically and physically.
But one side-effect of Darwing's complete lack of self-esteem is a complete lack of self-value, as well. Once he is given a cause to fight for, he will be highly willing to lay down his life for said cause, his shy nature the only thing stopping such lack of self-worth transforming into full-blown recklessness.
To break through Darwing's self-imposed shell would take a tremendous effort...but if one could do so, they might just find the last traces of a kind, gentle and proud dragon Darwing truly is. But it will be a long road to get there...
Magical Abilities (if applicable): If Darwing has a grasp on magical powers, he generally has a diverse, but rather uncontrolled ability to manipulate wind and air. His love of flying and affinity with the skies has gifted him with the ability to alter air currents and pressures. With experience and practice, this ability could theoretically be used to control any wind-based weather phenomenon. But Darwing's grasp of this talent is limited, as he is still learning to even use it properly.
Other Abilities/Skills: As a dragon, Darwing has a natural ability to fly, and can also breathe fire (this is not a magical talent, instead being produced from a complex system in his throat). Since Darwing's childhood was often spent flying aimlessly in an attempt to avoid his tormentors and let his mind wander, his flying skills are not to be taken lightly.
Strengths: Darwing's true place appears to be in the skies. His grace and agility in the sky is nearly unmatched, and his raw speed can be impressive when he puts his full effort into it, as well.
Weaknesses: A life of isolation and abuse has taken its toll on Darwing's self-esteem and confidence. Socially, Darwing is highly shy and awkward, and in a confrontation, he is quick to back down and submit to the aggressor...unless he believes he has something to fight for, in which case he can sometimes display a deeply hidden sense of courage...but such events are extremely rare.
History: The circumstances of Darwing's conception are known to only a select few dragons, with Darwing not being one of them...but Darwing is one of the only cross-breed dragons in existance, if not the only one. Despite this, his egg was laid along with a clutch of pure-breed eggs, meaning no-one aside from those aware of his mother's brief affair suspected Darwing's true heritage, including his step-father, Bor'red.
However, from the moment Darwing hatched, he was condemned to a childhood of suffering and torment. His appearance displayed his cross-breed status, even if the clan he was born to simply mistook it for deformation...a curse and abomination to them and their superstitious ways. The clan, including Bor'red, very nearly had him killed simply for the way he was born, but his mother, Aimara, fiercely defended him, giving him a life...even if it was not much of one.
Growing up in the clan, Darwing's life was lonely and troubled. Initially, he was simply shunned, his own half-siblings turning on him as mere hatchlings, leaving only his mother to care for and protect him, ensuring his survival. But as he grew older, ignorance turned to bullying, simple teasing and ridiculing, crushing what little self-esteem Aimara was able to give the young dragon. The more time that passed, the more Darwing retreated into himself, only ever opening up when he was either completely alone, or in the sole presence of his mother.
But as Darwing reached maturity, his newfound adult status did nothing to stop the torment...instead, mental and psychological abuse turned physical. Within weeks, Darwing was the target of several violent attacks, only his highly developed flying skills saving him from several nasty scrapes. But within his first month as an adult, the attacks turned lethal, and after several attempts on his life, Darwing knew that staying with the clan was just a delayed death sentence.
Finally, barely of age in the dragon world, Darwing went into self-imposed exile from his clan, Aimara staying behind due to her need to look after her other children, and remain by her mate's side, even if Darwing's birth had left their relationship brutally strained. With no friends, no family, and no purpose left, Darwing has no idea where he's going or what he's going to do, but his pessimistic nature has him prepared for the worst his mind can imagine.
Parents: Aimara (mother), Bor'red (step-father), biological father unknown
