“Pika Pi.” The yellow and brown mouse Pokemon shook her trainer, trying to tell her that the sun had just risen and it was time to go. The teenager girl groaned, and pulled her blanket over her head. “Not now Mako. I know I said we would start on the road to Lavender Town first thing, as soon as the sun was up, but I’m tired. Go back to sleep.” The Pikachu, Mako, didn’t like this answer. “Pika..CHU!!!” It exclaimed, shooting a bolt of arched lighting at her trainer. Not enough to hurt her, but enough to wake her up and keep her up. “Ouch! Mako, I’m up, I’m up. Pushy.” The teenager grumbled, sitting up, and stretching. Mako nodded her approval. The girl rolled her electric blue eyes, shaking her head, causing blonde and bright pink streaks to fall in her face.
The house is so quiet, the girl mused as she got up, and quickly got dressed. Her two older brothers, Stephen and Chase were in Hoenn and her parents; well she didn’t like to talk about them much at all. Mako watching, the girl quickly gathered up all her stuff she had unpacked a week earlier. A trainer idea card with the name: Rowen Lasater fell to the floor, and Mako picked it up with her paws and handed it to her trainer. Rowen smiled. ‘Thanks Mako. Now, let’s go.’ Making sure she had her other pokeballs, she walked out of the two-story house, locking the door behind her and starting down the bricked path, Mako jumping on her shoulder. Humming quietly to herself, the fifteen year old almost didn’t notice all the reporters and trainers gathered around Professors Oaks research lab. Rowen frowned slightly, wondering what could be going on.
“Hmmm, wanna go check it out, Mako?” With Mako’s approval, the two walked down the side path that led to the lab.

Jace stuffed his hands in the pockets of his black slacks, scuffing a designer shoe against the pavement. He hovered around the front of the research facility, noting the huge crowd around Professor Oak and sighing. How could he ever speak to the man if everyone else in the city wanted to? Here he'd thought that Pallet Town would be quiet and unassuming, a place where it would be easy to get a chance to speak with the Pokemon Professor. All he'd wanted was a shove in the right direction, a place to start learning to be a good Trainer and maybe persuade the professor into giving him a Pokedex... an adventure with his three friends, the Pokemon he carried with him. A little vulpix sat at his feet, looking up with worried amber eyes.
- Jacey, you okay? -[/b] She asked softly with her telekinetic ability. Jace fingered the two other Poke balls at his waist, tan hands contrasting sharply with the white of the ball.
"Yeah, Viola, I'll be fine," Jace sighed, and ran a hand through his messy black locks. After a moment, he leaned down to scoop the little fox up, petting her ears. Viola closed her eyes in ecstasy, growling affectionately. She curled her six tails up under her back feet, the bows on them getting tangled and the shell bell jingling merrily.
Jace smiled, allowing the little fox to comfort him. His eyes caught sight of a girl rushing by, looking just as irked as he. A little pikachu followed at her heels--another Trainer, it seemed. Still carrying Viola, he sidled up to the girl, quirking an eyebrow and settling his gray-green gaze upon her face.
"You having trouble, too, huh?" He asked in a resigned sort of voice. He jerked a thumb over his shoulder. "Tough for anybody to get through right now, I guess... May I ask your name?"

“Pika Pi.” Mako intoned, titling her head, trying to get a better look of what was going on. Rowen sighed with irritation. “You having trouble, too, huh?” A voice asked, and Rowen looked up to see a boy with dark hair and gray-green eyes standing beside her, a little vulpix, a baby by the looks of it, on his shoulder. His hair was shaggy, but in a chic way, and Rowen noted that he was a little bit taller than she was. Okay, forget a little bit. He was around Chase’s height, 5’11, but less built than her oldest brother was. She smiled at him, and nodded. The crowds around the lab were getting annoying. Mako made an annoyed sound, and Rowen smiled slightly. Normally, she would have laughed out loud, but with this young man who didn’t even know, even though he seemed quiet friendly, her internal shield went up. “Tough for anybody to get through right now, I guess... May I ask your name?” She was about to say something when the crowds all started to go away, making disappointed sounds. Professor Oak had come outside, and told them all to come back later. “Finally.” Rowen muttered, and walked over to the Professor, quiet away that the boy was following quietly behind her. “Professor Oak, what was all that?” She quipped. The Professor smiled at her. “Hello Rowen, I see you’re back from Sinnoh?” He questioned. Rowen nodded. “Yes sir. I just got back a week ago. I was planning on paying a visit for a while, but I hadn’t fount time.” The professor nodded. “Well, it’s good you’re here. I nodded someone who could speak Latin well and since your brothers are in Hoenn, I believe, I was about to come over and pay a visit.” Rowen nodded, then she turned to the boy.
“Oh, I’m sorry. I’m Rowen Lasater. Who are -?” Mako jumped up onto the boy’s head, much to Rowen’s embarrassment. “Oh, I’m sorry!” Rowen blushed. “Mako, don’t do that.” She scolded softly. Professor Oak watched what was going on with a smile, then said, ”Rowen, come by anytime. It’s no rush. Feel free to bring your new friend alone too.” With a chuckle, the Professor walked into his lab, the doors softly closing behind him. Rowen blushed. “Where was I? Oh yeah, what’s your name? "

Jace noticed the girl eyeballing him, seemingly sizing him up--trainers did tend to do that with one another. While she did so, he took in her appearance, too--young, willowy, with cheekily streaked blonde hair. Pink, really? She must have a fun side somewhere in there, then... Jace grinned at her pikachu's annoyed noise, knowing that Pokemon often were intelligent enough to make their own opinions on current events.
-Pretty,-[/b] Viola noted. She jumped down to the ground and shook out her fur.
Yeah, but probably a little trouble maker, Jace answered with his thoughts, a wry little voice flavoring them.
Their conversation was interrupted before it even began, however, when Oak finally swept the crowd away, choosing to speak with the pink-and-blonde haired girl. Jace frowned slightly, jealousy making him irritated. She was already on speaking terms with the Pokemon Prof? Jace huffed quietly behind her, annoyed that he was blown off and that the professor was being so friendly with her when Jace was trying so hard to get his attention in the first place...
Viola's tails twitched, her honey eyes upon her master. She always knew what he was thinking.
Then the girl remembered he was there and turned to him, her eyes apologetic.
“Oh, I’m sorry. I’m Rowen Lasater. Who are -?”
Jace grinned lopsidedly, going to stick his hand out to shake hers, when they were interrupted again, this time by the girl's high-spirited pikachu. The little mouse jumped on his head, its little paws messing about with his hair.
“Oh, I’m sorry!” The girl blushed. “Mako, don’t do that.”
Jace laughed, a deep sound from somewhere in his chest. He gently plucked the mouse from his head and held it out at arm's length, looking it in the eyes.
"Mako, hmm? What a cute name! You're an adventurous one, aren't you?" Jace simply loved cute Pokemon, and this one had instantly stolen his heart. He set Mako on the ground, patting her head.
"I'm Jace," he said finally, grinning up at Rowen from his crouched position. "This is Viola," he said, gesturing at his vulpix. She tilted her head up at the girl in greeting and let out a little fox-bark.
Jace watched the professor go back inside, and his smile fell fractionally. Maybe he could get to know this girl and she'd be nice enough to introduce them later... He looked back up at Rowen when she spoke once more and grinned.
"Not a problem. Trainer, I take it?"

Rowen smiled when Jace said how cute Mako’s nickname was. Stephen had always said that Mako was a stupid nickname, and only a moron would call their starter Pokemon that. Mako didn’t like Rowen being called a moron, even if it was by her older brother, and had shocked Stephen then and there. "Not a problem. Trainer, I take it?" Rowen smiled, and nodded. “Yes, are you-“ She was just about to finish her question, when there was a big blast that almost knocked her off her feet. “Prepare for –“ The red haired girl hadn’t gotten to finish her speech when her eyes landed on Rowen, and a vicious smirk formed on her pretty face. ‘Well, well, well, look what we have here. James, I thought Vivian and Kaden’s brat was in Hoenn with those annoying brothers.” The purple haired male smirked. He looked around twenty or so, about the same age as the girl.
“So did I, Jessie. Well, we have a surprise. I wonder, Rowen, are you as good as your parents were before they got put away? I mean, they weren’t second in command to the Boss for nothing.” James teased. Rowen paled. Mako growled, a low sound, and Jessie laughed. “Oh look. The MOUSE is gonna try and stop us.” Mako growled, and Rowen suddenly found herself mad. They could insult her, embarrass her in front of a new potential friend, but when they called Mako a mouse, that was it.
"Jace, you might wanna go inside. This might get a little tough." Rowen said quietly, shocked that she even cared. Jessie laughed. 'Oh look! The little twerp has a boyfriend!"

Just when the two trainers began another conversation, they were interrupted yet again, this time by people who seemed to know the girl. People with... big, red 'R's on their shirts...
"T-team Rocket!" Jace cried. Next to him, Viola's fur stood on end and she growled, honey eyes glaring. Jace could hear her growl over her telekinetic 'line', and knew that the people around them could, too.
‘Well, well, well, look what we have here. James, I thought Vivian and Kaden’s brat was in Hoenn with those annoying brothers.”
Jace looked at Rowen questioningly, wondering at her background. He didn't really know her, after all... they'd just met, and so far, she wasn't really giving the impression of being the best person... How did these Rocket grunts know her?
“So did I, Jessie. Well, we have a surprise. I wonder, Rowen, are you as good as your parents were before they got put away? I mean, they weren’t second in command to the Boss for nothing.”
At this statement, Jace gasped, but then his face was set in a frown, his lips a hard line across his normally relaxed expression. So... this girl's parents were in jail for working with Rocket. He glanced at her disapprovingly--but then he remembered that Oak was on good terms with her. Which meant that maybe she wasn't following in her parents' footsteps...?
“Oh look. The MOUSE is gonna try and stop us.”
The little growl coming from the pikachu made Jace almost chuckle, but he stopped himself from irritating the electric mouse further. All he needed was a zap to the brain to fry him. Sheesh. Below him, Viola barked at the Rocket member for the insult to a fellow Pokemon.
- Bad people, you leave now! -[/b] Viola 'shouted' through her mental link at the two Rocket grunts. Jace looked at his vulpix proudly, feeling a surge of affection for her strong personality.
"Jace, you might wanna go inside. This might get a little tough."
"Tough?" Jace laughed easily. "I'm not just gonna let you fight alone against these two. Besides, I'm not a Pokemon trainer without a good reason," he countered. Viola barked in affirmation, steeling herself. "I'll fight with you. But you're definitely gonna have to do some explaining," he said, raising an eyebrow at her. He placed a hand upon the Poke ball that contained Rast, ready for anything.
'Oh look! The little twerp has a boyfriend!"
This last statement made Jace's cheeks sting with a hint of a blush. Stunned for a moment, he recovered quickly, anger taking over. He set up a strategy and readied himself.
"All right, you two, cut it out," he shouted, standing by Rowen steadily.

Rowen glanced at Jace, and felt ashamed. ‘Rowen, snap out of it! Since when do you care what people think of you?’ Her inner voice snapped sharply. Rowen looked down, not wanting to meet his eyes. “Hitmochan! Come out!” Jessie called. James let out a Haunter. The two Rockets grinned with malice at the two trainers, but Rowen wasn’t gonna back down without a fight. “Mako, are you just gonna let stupid Team Rocket do this?” Rowen asked angrily, her temper flaming up. Mako growled, and waited for Rowen to issue a command. Rowen smiled slightly. “Mako, use Thunderbolt on that Haunter!” She called, and Mako nodded, sparks of bright blue electricity starting to come from the mouse Pokemon’s body. It hit the ghost type, but didn’t do as much damage as Rowen had hoped. “Haunter, use Curse!” James called. Rowen scowled.
“Mako, dodge!” But Mako heard the issue too late. The attack hit the Pokemon full out, and sent it into a deep sleep. Rowen cried out, and hurriedly recalled the fainted Pikachu. Jessie laughed and unexpectedly, called back her Pokemon, as did James. The confusion must have shown clearly on Rowen’s face, because the redhead laughed.
“Don’t waist your time. You’re no match for us. There’s not even any Pokemon worth stealing. You're Mom and Dad would be so disappointed in you." Jessie shock her head in disappointment, while Rowen looked down in shame. “Next time we see you be ready for a REAL battle. “ James laughed, and with a flash of light, a smoke bomb, they were gone. Rowen looked sadly at Jace, and shook her head. “I’m sorry about that. You want me to explain right?”

Jace caught Rowen's look, noting the fleeting look of shame in her eyes. Not something she was proud of, then... He was starting to feel some form of sympathy for her, especially in the face of the tormenters from Team Rocket. His eyes flicked from hers to Jessie and James, however, when they'd called out a hitmonchan and a haunter. The Pokemon's eyes were equally as menacing as their trainers'--a sad truism of the transfer of human personalities being imprinted upon their Pokemon.
"Viola, don't do anything yet," Jace called to his vulpix. She twitched her tails in annoyance.
- We do something, Jace,- [/i] she snapped, lifting her lip to show a little white fang.
"I know... but we need to wait and see if she actually needs help first," Jace explained. This girl seems like she'd be offended if we help too much,[/i] He concluded silently to the little fox. Slightly mollified, Viola twitched her tails once more, letting her trainer know that she wouldn't obey for very long. Jace chuckled, despite their situation.
He watched the battle closely, staying out of the way, but lurched forward with a cry when Mako took a hard hit. Viola snarled and leapt towards the haunter, but when the pair of villains laughed and called their Pokemon back, she stilled, a growl still on her lips and her fur standing straight up.
- I told you,-[/i] Viola growled mentally to Jace. He winced, knowing that she would be mad at him for a while yet. She recalled herself into the Poke ball to be left alone.
"Sorry, Vi..."
Jace ignored Jessie's triumphant screeching and tucked his hands into his pockets, slouching in guilt. Rowen came up to him, her blonde and pink hair falling into her face. Her face is really cute, he found himself thinking. After a second of glazed staring, he mentally shook himself. She was a complete stranger and possibly a villain herself.
“I’m sorry about that. You want me to explain right?”
A smile quirked up one side of his mouth.
"Yeah, that'd be nice. How do those two know you? And who exactly are you?" Jace asked. He really didn't know why he hadn't left already to leave this girl behind. She was... intriguing, somehow. Cute, too. Someone this young couldn't possibly have done much wrong... right?

“Yeah, that'd be nice. How do those two know you? And who exactly are you?" Jace asked her. He wasn’t being mean, but Rowen had a fleeting feeling that any chance of friendship was vanishing fast. Rowen looked away, not wanting to meet his eyes…and him to see her cry. No one EVER saw her cry. Not her brothers, not Jace, who she barely knew. “My parents, before they were… arrested, were some of the top members in Team Rocket. Some of the worse…” She was aware she was crying, but didn’t care anymore. “When I was six, they were arrested. I don’t remember much about that day, except that Chase, my oldest brother, he was eleven at the time, tried to make me and my other brother Stephen, who was ten, understand when he barely knew what was going on… All he said was Mom and Dad weren’t the best people, and that we would be better off without them... “ She finished quietly. She met Jace’s eyes. “I’m not the bad guy, I’m just not the best good guy. I try though.”

Jace winced when the shorter girl looked away, seeming very uncomfortable when he asked his question. Damn it, Jace, it's not polite to pry. Now you've hurt her feelings... he scolded himself, and uncrossed his arms that he'd subconsciously put together in protection of himself and judgment of her.
“My parents, before they were… arrested, were some of the top members in Team Rocket. Some of the worse…”
...And look now, you've made her cry. Tears welled up in Jace's own eyes in extreme guilt, his heart clenching. Her parents were in jail? Part of Team Rocket? Good Arceus, he hadn't meant to...
"I...I didn't mean..." Jace started, but she kept talking, tears falling from her eyes. Jace quieted and listened uncomfortably. He made a mental not to never judge a stranger ever again... a habit he usually never privied himself to, but now the idea was even more firmly planted into his mind.
When her glassy eyes met his, full of pain and memories, the 17-year-old boy fidgeted, suddenly feeling naked and see-through.
“I’m not the bad guy, I’m just not the best good guy. I try though.”
He sighed and came forward, not quite meeting her gaze.
"Look, I'm really sorry... I didn't mean for you to be upset, I'm not the kind of guy who goes around making girls cry," He said desperately, making a helpless gesture with his hands. "So... let's start over." He held out his hand, a hopeful smile on his face. "Hi, I'm Jace... I train Pokemon. And, you are?"
